WATERBURY, Conn. — Days before the school year begins, Dr. Darren Schwartz has been named the interim superintendent of Waterbury Public Schools.
The city’s Board of Education held a vote to make the appointment during a special meeting on Tuesday evening. According to the school district, Schwartz has served as Waterbury’s deputy superintendent since 2021. In that role, he began fulfilling the duties of superintendent on July 9.
Schwartz is a Waterbury resident who joined the district’s central office in 2012 as the instructional leadership director. He assumed the role of chief academic officer in 2015 and filled the deputy superintendent role six years later. Schwartz is a former teacher in East Granby and Hartford.
“I take tremendous pride in the responsibility bestowed upon me as interim superintendent,” Schwartz said. “Education is a crucial public service and vital to a prosperous and sustainable democracy.”
According to the city, Schwartz earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Hartford and a Master of Arts from Columbia University. He is a Master of Education and Executive Leadership Program graduate of the University of Connecticut and completed a Doctor of Education degree from Northeastern University earlier this year.
“I strive to be an effective educational leader, and I aim to create a more just school system for all of Waterbury’s students,” Schwartz said.
The upcoming 2024-2025 school year for all Waterbury Public Schools begins next Monday, Aug. 26.
