WATERBURY, Conn. — A teen is hospitalized after being shot inside Brass Mill Center in Waterbury on Friday evening, police say.
Waterbury police said officers responded to the mall at 5 p.m. on a report of a shots fired incident with a gunshot victim that occurred inside.
Officers found a 17-year-old in the food court area with a gunshot wound. The victim is currently being treated at a local hospital as of 9:30 Saturday morning, police said.
Police said this was an isolated incident between two individuals and there is no threat or danger to the community.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
Waterbury Mayor Paul Pernerewskii released a statement following this incident:
“There is no responsibility I take more serious as mayor than the safety of our residents and those who visit our city. I have been in constant contact with Chief Spagnolo about today’s incident at the Brass Mill Center. There is no threat or danger to the community, and officers are currently on scene investigating the situation. I have also spoken with Stacey Mendyka, the general manager at the mall, and we will be working with her and her staff so that shoppers can feel safe, especially in the middle of this shopping season”.
Unfortunately, gun violence continues to affect too many communities across the United States, including our Brass City. We will continue to work with our state and federal partners to be sure we have the tools and resources, including strong laws, to allow us to address violence such as what occurred today at the Brass Mill Center.”
Anyone with information is requested to contact the WPD Detective Bureau at (203)574-6941 or Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at (203)755-1234.
