WATERBURY, Conn. — Waterbury police arrested a mother and stepfather on Tuesday after allegedly leaving their six-month-old unattended who rolled on top of a heating element.
The child's mother, Keturah Williams, 36, and the child's stepfather, Damon Martin, 51, turned themselves into police and are facing charges of risk of injury / impairing morals of a child and cruelty to persons. Williams was held on a $75,000 bond and Martin was held on a $150,000 bond pending their arraignment in court Tuesday.
According to police, they received a complaint from Saint Mary's Hospital staff on Oct. 24 for a six-month-old brought into the emergency room with second and third degree burns on his body.
Waterbury Police Department Special Victims Unit detectives learned that both Williams and Martin were home when the child was burned, according to police.
They allegedly left the child on a bed unattended "for a period of time" when he rolled off and became wedged between the wall and the bed, while lying on top of a hot electric heating element.
Police said both caregivers "delayed medical treatment and consumed alcohol and drugs during the time that the child was injured."
The child was treated for his injuries at St. Mary's Hospital and is now in the custody of the state's Department of Children and Families, or DCF. Police have been working with DCF during their investigation.
Two other children who were also in the home at the time were removed and are also in the custody of DCF pending the investigation, according to police.
