WATERBURY, Conn. — A Springfield Massachusetts man was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for the 2021 murder of a Waterbury man.
Jose Soto, 27, of Springfield, Mass., was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of Trevor Figueroa, 27, in Waterbury.
Soto pleaded guilty in Waterbury Superior Court to charges of Murder, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, and Carrying a Pistol Without a Permit.
Prosecutors said that in the early morning hours of July 17, 2021, Waterbury police were called to a report of shots fired at the intersection of East Main and Wall Streets. They found Figueroa with a gunshot wound to the face. He was taken to the hospital where he later died. In the video from surveillance cameras that recorded the shooting, police found that a vehicle used in the shooting had Massachusetts plates. With the help of police in Massachusetts, Waterbury police identified the defendant and two other suspects. Soto was arrested in October 2021.
Carlos Leon was arrested in connection to the murder as well. Leon was charged with criminal attempt at murder, criminal use of a weapon, illegal discharge of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, reckless endangerment, and illegal possession of weapons in a motor vehicle.
