Hot Thanksgiving meals served to those in need in Waterbury

Individuals had the option of choosing turkey, ham, mixed vegetables, sweet potatoes, cornbread, corn and a few others.

WATERBURY, Conn. — The Feed Me Ministries organization served about 200 meals Sunday afternoon to people in need in Waterbury.

The group serves every Sunday, but this time, the food was Thanksgiving themed. Individuals had the option of choosing turkey, ham, mixed vegetables, sweet potatoes, cornbread, corn and a few others.

“We're praising God and having some meals and everything is a blessing today,” Edward Ferrence said.

Feed Me Ministries helps people in need, like Ferrence, while also spreading the Word of God.

“I'm a vet and I've been homeless seven years now off and on and ever since this been here I've been coming here, finding my soul with good people and I'm very blessed to still be around,” Ferrence said. “They've been helping me a lot because I've been in a lot of dark places. There were a few times that I was in a very dark place. So, but they brought, they helped me bring me back.”

Danielle D’Amico, who founded the organization in 2021 with four others, said they do this every week because of their love for Jesus.

“We want people to feel the same love that we feel this world is getting so dark right now and we just wanna be a beacon of light and Jesus is that light,” D’Amico said. “We just want others to feel that and we've seen so many people's lives touched since we've been here and that's such a blessing to us. You know, we thought we're gonna come out here and we're gonna bless people. But in our return, they're blessing us.”

What started with five founders, a table and a bag of sandwiches turned into what they hosted on 777 East Main St. Sunday, with a dozen people coming to volunteer like Aleena Smith.

“They usually give out clothes and stuff and I had extra clothes that I was like, ‘ok, I'm not gonna wear this anymore, so I should give it away.’ So I bought it and they were like, oh, we're serving food today instead of clothes. So I'm like, ‘ok, I'll help’” Smith said.

She stressed the importance of volunteering.

“We don't know where we will be in the future. We don't know if we will be in a situation like this. So, any type of help that we give somebody is so much appreciated and you don't know when you will do that kind of help,” Smith said.

Feed Me Ministries will continue to serve their community every Sunday.
