WATERBURY, Conn. — A 20-year-old Waterbury man was arrested in connection with the murder of 18-year-old Joseph Zavala earlier this month, police said Friday.
Duane Mercer is facing multiple charges, including murder, for fatally shooting Zavala on Nov. 18.
According to police, they received a report around 7:30 p.m. of a teenager being dropped off at the emergency room at Saint Mary’s Hospital in the city with a gunshot wound. He died from his injuries at the hospital.
An investigation revealed the shooting happened in the area of North Main Street at Kingsbury Street. The events leading up to the shooting have not been released.
Mercer was arrested on Thursday. He is facing charges of murder, conspiracy to murder, illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment, and carrying a pistol without a permit. He was held on a $2 million bond and is expected to be arraigned on Friday.
Police said the investigation remains active.
