WATERBURY, Conn. — A Danbury woman is dead after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 84 in Waterbury, state police said.
The crash happened Sunday just before 6:30 p.m. on I-84 East, in the area of exit 18. Police said that a Chevy Tahoe was driving in the right lane behind a BMW 528I. At the same time, a Honda Accord EX driven by a Danbury man was driving the wrong way, going westbound in the eastbound lanes, and was in the left lane heading towards the Tahoe and the BMW.
According to state police, the driver of the BMW managed to swerve to the right to avoid the crash with the Honda. Despite the move, both vehicles still side-swiped each other.
The Honda was then "redirected," where it then collided with the Tahoe head-on.
The driver and passengers in the Tahoe didn't report any injuries, and the driver and passenger inside the BMW were taken to local hospitals for minor injuries, according to police.
The driver behind the Honda was taken to Waterbury Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the passenger, 45-year-old Francisca Cortez-Arias, was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
State police continue to investigate the crash and anyone who may have witnessed the crash or may have dash camera footage is asked to contact Trooper Magloire at Troop A in Southbury, 203-267-2200 or email clifford.magloire@ct.gov.
