WEST HAVEN, Conn. — A New York man was arrested after police said he attempted to drown two of his children in West Haven early Saturday morning.
Around 2:30 a.m., a patrol officer noticed a Nissan SUV parked on the beach near Ocean and Dawson Avenue. As the officer approached the vehicle, he heard screaming coming from the water.
Police said Romney Desronvil of Queens, New York, and his two small children were seen in the water. As the officer entered the water, Desronvil drifted further away with the children, screaming, “Stay back.”
Police said the officer believed Desronvil was attempting to drown his children. Responding officers immediately entered the water. A boat was used by the West Shore Fire Department and other officers on scene.
The initial officer was able to rescue both children and brought them to shore with assistance from back up officers. The children were taken to a local hospital with an escort from the New Haven and West Haven Police Department.
Both children remain in the ICU at the hospital.
Desronvil is in West Haven Police custody while the charges are pending.
