WEST HAVEN, Conn — A sophomore student at West Haven High School and member of the varsity football team has died, the school's principal announced.
Officials with the CIAC said the student's name was Christopher Fidalgo-Pugh. Arrangements will be made to honor his memory at the Saturday state championship game that West Haven High will be playing in.
West Haven High School Principal Dana Paredes said that Fidalgo-Pugh's death was unexpected and tragic.
"This news has deeply impacted our school community, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time," Paredes said in a message to the school community. "He was not only an integral part of our school's athletic community but also a bright and cherished member of our student body. The loss of such a promising young life is profoundly felt by us all."
The school has convened a crisis team to help students cope with the loss of their classmate, according to West Haven Superintendent Neil Cavallaro.
"The school immediately convened a Crises Team, and working with our Pupil Services Department supports were put into place. Resources from both within the district as well as outside services were utilized for counseling and advice," said Cavallaro.
Paredes also encourages parents and guardians to talk to their kids about loss.
"As a community, we stand united in offering comfort and compassion to one another during this challenging time," Paredes said.
Fidalgo-Pugh's cause of death is not known.
West Haven High's opponent on Saturday Staples High School offered condolences to the West Haven community.
