WEST HAVEN, Conn. — A state lawmaker representing the city of West Haven has stepped down from her position days before she is sworn in as the city’s new mayor.
Rep. Dorinda Borer submitted her resignation letter to Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas on Friday, effective at noon on Dec. 2.
“It has been a privilege to serve as State Representative for the people of West Haven,” Borer wrote in her letter.
The Democratic lawmaker has served on the 115th Assembly District since 2017. She beat the Republican mayoral candidate, Barry Lee Cohen, and write-in candidate Steven Mullins on Nov. 7 to become the city’s second female mayor. She earned the highest vote totals for mayors in decades.
Borer will succeed Mayor Nancy Rossi, who did not seek a fourth term in office. She will be West Haven’s 13th mayor.
Borer and the rest of the city’s elected officials will be sworn in on Sunday.
Under state law, Gov. Ned Lamont has 10 days to issue a writ of election to choose Borer’s successor. This special election must be held 46 days later.
Major party conventions must take place 36 days before the special election.
