STONINGTON, Conn — Police arrested a man they said struck a construction worker Monday on I-95 in Stonington and fled the scene to be arrested a short time later in Rhode Island.
At 6:32 p.m. Monday, troopers went to Interstate 95 Northbound in the area of Exit 91-92 in Stonington for reports of a construction worker struck by a vehicle in a restricted construction zone.
Witnesses told police the GMC Sierra was seen driving in the left lane, which was shut down for the construction project, hit a construction worker from behind causing minor injuries. It then left the scene.
Witnesses said the pickup continued driving north. Troopers caught up to the vehicle in the area of the Rhode Island state line. Rhode Island troopers assisted Connecticut troopers who had stopped the vehicle.
Julio Leodan Macancela, 46, of Danbury was arrested for driving while under the influence and taken into custody by Rhode Island State Police.
Investigators have completed an arrest warrant application for Macanela's involvement in the collision in Connecticut, which was submitted it to the court for review.
