VOLUNTOWN, Conn. — The Voluntown Volunteer Fire Department responded to a "large" brush fire in town on Saturday and will continue working to extinguish the fire Sunday.
Firefighters responded to the brush fire between the 100 block of Shetucket Turnpike and Wylie School Road. VVFD said Sunday afternoon they had contained the fire to a small area and that it will continue burning through the night.
Crews will return Sunday morning in a multi-day effort to continue working to extinguish the fire, caused by dry weather making the fire "burn deep into the underbrush making full extinguishment difficult for crews on the ground," VVFD said.
"Anyone in out in the forest currently in this area please get out of woods," Voluntown Volunteer firefighters advised on social media.
There is a temporary flight restriction placed in the area, prohibiting drones or low-flying planes uninvolved in firefighting operations from flying in the area.
Firefighters were also near Ayers Mountain in Franklin battling a brush fire Saturday. The Taftville Fire Department was at the mountain Saturday morning before being sent to Voluntown to bring water supply for UTVs and assist in controlling the fire "in the forest."
