GROTON, Conn. — A Mashantucket man was arrested after an investigation into a fatal dirt bike crash that happened during a street takeover in Groton this past summer.
Scott Whipple, 25, was arrested Thursday morning and is facing nearly a dozen vehicle and endangerment charges, including manslaughter in the death of Tiara Wheeler, 24, Whipple was driving the unregistered dirt bike that both were riding on at the time of the crash, police said.
On the evening of Aug 28, police responded to a crash at the intersection of Long Hill Road and Meridian St. Extension, which happened to be during what became a street takeover involving ATVs and motorcycles.
Arriving officers found Whipple with serious injuries and Wheeler had died at the scene, police said. Whipple was later taken to L&M Hospital and later airlifted to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment.
An investigation found that a 2010 Audi Q7 was traveling south on Long Hill Road and had a green light to turn left into the Groton Shopping Center. As the Audi was turning, several ATVs were driving north through the intersection while their traffic light was red, according to police.
Whipple crashed into the right rear passenger side of the Audi. The Audi driver was also taken to L&M Hospital and was later released.
Whipple was released after posting a $200,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 16.
This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Groton Town Police at 860-441-6712.
