GROTON, Conn. — A 14-year-old from Groton is dead after a crash early Monday morning, police said.
Around 1:20 a.m., Groton emergency dispatch was notified by iPhone Crash Detection and other 911 calls reporting a crash on Fishtown Road near Little Gull Lane.
Investigators said a 2012 Toyota 4runner was driving northbound on Fishtown Road, just south of the Mystic River Magnet School, when it entered the southbound lane and hit a tree.
The first officers to arrive at the scene reported that all four people inside the SUV were trapped. Other first responders from the Mystic Fire Department, Old Mystic Fire Department Heavy Rescue, North Stonington Ambulance, L&M Paramedics, and Mohegan Tribe Paramedics aided Groton.
All four inside the SUV had to be extricated, and they were initially treated at the scene before being rushed to L&M Hospital in critical condition.
Just before 11 p.m. Monday, Groton police were told that one of the occupants, 14-year-old Carson Wilson, was pronounced dead from their injuries.
The three others in the SUV, two 17-year-olds and one 18-year-old, remain hospitalized. Their condition isn't known at this time.
At this time, it's unknown what caused the crash.
"This terrible incident will undoubtedly have a significant and lasting impact, not only to Groton and Mystic, but it extends to surrounding communities through multiple connections," said Groton Cheif of Police Louis Fusaro. "Our department extends its heartfelt sympathies and prayers to the families impacted by this horrible tragedy, and we remain committed to conducting a thorough, impartial, and exhaustive investigation into the circumstances that led up to this crash."
Southeastern Connecticut Regional Traffic Unit members were also at the scene to help with the investigation.
The crash remains under investigation; anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has other information that could assist investigators is asked to call the Groton Police Department at 860-441-6712.
