Student injured following Groton school bus crash

The crash happened at the intersection of New London Road and Flanders Road.

GROTON, Conn. — Groton Town Police are investigating a crash between a school bus and a car that collided Thursday morning leaving one student injured.

Around 9:00 a.m., police were called to the area of New London Road (Route 1), Groton and the intersection of Flanders Road for the report of a crash involving a school bus and a car.

Police said a Student Transportation of America School Bus with a driver and thirty-four students was heading eastbound on New London Road approaching the intersection of Flanders Road. A Volvo was stopped on New London Road at the intersection of Flanders Road facing eastbound waiting to make a left turn onto Flanders Road. The school bus struck the Volvo from behind before traveling to the right and off the south side of New London Road, striking a utility pole and a large boulder, causing damage to the bus.

The school bus was taking students to Mystic River Magnet School, which is an elementary school located on Fishtown Road in the Mystic section of Groton.

Emergency crews, an administrator from the Mystic River Magnet School, and several school nurses, also arrived on scene to assist the students and to contact the parents of the students who were on the bus and advise them of the accident.

One student from the bus was taken to L&M Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The school bus was towed from the scene. Another school bus and several parents arrived on scene to transport the students to school.

The operator of the school bus was cited for failing to drive a reasonable distance apart from another vehicle.

This accident remains under investigation. If anyone witnessed this crash or has other information which would assist officers with this case, please call the Groton Police Department at 860-441-6712.
