WATERFORD, Conn. — Girls on the Run Southeastern Connecticut recently recognized a volunteer for her outstanding contributions and leadership.
Breanna Poirier, a local Girls on the Run Southeast CT coach and new member of the organization’s board, received the Remarkable Volunteer Award from Girls on the Run International.
The Remarkable Volunteer Award is part of an annual national volunteer recognition program that honors Girls on the Run volunteers nationwide. Each year, the process begins with nominating volunteers who have made a major impact as a coach, fundraiser or council supporter.
According to Girls on the Run Southeastern CT, Poirier is a site liaison and coach for the Girls on the Run team at the Mohegan Tribe. She also serves as the Tribe’s Community Health Outreach Coordinator.
With assistance from Poirier, the Mohegan Tribe has helped Girls on the Run of Southeastern CT strengthen its community engagement and bolster its partnerships. Additionally, Poirier played a significant role in moving the Spring End of the Season 5K Celebration to Fort Shantok so that it could accommodate its largest number of participants to date.
“Breanna has given so much of her time and energy to Girls on the Run in the time she has been part of the organization,” Kate McDonald, executive director of Girls on the Run Southeastern CT, said. “We are so grateful to her and the entire Mohegan Tribe for their unmatched commitment to benefit girls throughout our region.”
Poirier received the award during a staff meeting at the Tribe’s offices. It was presented to her by McDonald. Jen Daly-McFadden, board chair for Girls on the Run Southeastern CT, also weighed in on the difference Poirier has made.
“Breanna’s heart and energy goes into every task she takes on, and that is especially true for her work with Girls on the Run Southeastern CT,” Daly-McFadden said. “We are so fortunate to have her on our team, and so thrilled that her efforts are being recognized by Girls on the Run International.
Girls on the Run Southeastern CT is part of the nonprofit Girls on the Run International, which designs programming to strengthen third- to eighth-grade girls’ social, emotional, physical and behavioral skills so that they can successfully navigate life’s experiences.
The southeastern Connecticut nonprofit says it uses evidence-based programs to inspire participants to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, imagine their possibilities and confidently stand up for themselves and others.
