NEW LONDON, Conn. — A fatal crash occurred in New London on the Gold Star Bridge along Interstate 95 this week, according to a state police report filed at 6:42 p.m. that evening.
State police said a 76-year-old woman from Winamac, Ind. was killed in the crash.
A white 2014 Ford Edge carrying three people was being driven by a 52-year-old Indiana man in the southbound lane of I-95 less than half-a-mile before the Exit 83 on-ramp when the vehicle suffered a mechanical failure and stopped on the bridge within the travel lanes, according to state police.
A 2020 Freightliner cash-in-transit vehicle owned by Brink’s Incorporated was traveling southbound on I-95 north of the Ford Edge when it struck the Ford Edge in the rear, state police said.
State police said Dennis Arnold, the driver, and Michelle Evans of Indiana were in the front seat of the Ford Edge and were taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London for minor injuries.
Evelyn Diment, the 76-year-old woman, was seated in the rear of the Ford Edge and was taken to the same hospital for serious injuries, where she was later pronounced dead, according to state police.
Gretchen Guerin, of New London, was driving the Freightliner and was taken to the same hospital for minor injuries, state police said.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene, according to state police.
