GROTON, Conn. — The University of Connecticut is considering implementing student housing at its Avery Point campus in Groton, according to university spokesperson Stephanie Reitz Tuesday.
While UConn said that no decisions can be made until "more information is gathered and assessed," Reitz said that the university will begin "exploring the feasibility" of housing at the Avery Point campus, in addition to other enhancements that have not been determined yet.
Reitz added that there is currently no funding through the university or the state to build a residence hall at the campus, but that UConn is looking into alternative solutions including an "external partnership."
The plan to expand on UConn student housing is part of the school's new 2024-2034 Strategic Plan initiative, using feedback from more than 10,000 people including "students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry collaborators, friends of the University and many others," according to the university website.
The Avery Point campus currently offers specialized programs in marine sciences and maritime studies that can be completed at the campus, along with access to the university's more than 110 majors that can be finished at the main Storrs campus, Reitz said. More information about the campus can be found here.
UConn is also planning on student housing near the Downtown Hartford campus to begin in the fall of 2026. According to Reitz, the Connecticut State Bond Commission recently approved financing between the Capital Region Development Authority and Shelbourne Properties, the owner of a building facing Trumbull Street where 200 beds for student housing will be developed.
Reitz said that 50 four-person units in the Annex building facing Pratt Street in Hartford are planned to be developed and leased out to students starting in August of 2026 "if the owner's construction stays on schedule."
