THOMASTON, Conn. — A New York man was arrested in Thomaston Friday after police say he attempted to defraud a woman of $18,000.
Officers with the police department say hackers accessed a Thomaston resident's computer. The hackers then posed as Microsoft and provided her with a phone number to stop the intrusion.
When she called the number, however, a "representative" told her to withdraw $18,000 from her bank account. An agent with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) would come to her house to pick up the money.
A family member of the victim, upon learning what was happening, contacted the Thomaston Police Department. While they were at the victim's home, officers said the observed a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood at the time the so-called FDIC agent was scheduled to arrive.
Officers performed a traffic stop and arrested Zhaozhu Lin, 38, of Flushing, New York, following an investigation.
Lin was arrested on charges of Conspiracy to Commit Larceny 2nd Degree and was released after posting a $50,000 bond. He will appear in Torrington Superior Court on Sep. 16.
