MIDDLEFIELD, Conn. — There have been struggles with growing strawberries in the past at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield and at family farms across the state but not this year. 2024 has been “a peach” for strawberry growers according to John Lyman who now runs his family’s centuries-old farm.
“It’s been a great growing season so far, we got through the winter it was milder, but we got through it without any freeze damage,” said Lyman. He then added, “right now the plants are truly looking great, and all our crops look great this year.”
Walking along the five and a half acres that Lyman Orchards dedicates “Pick Your Own” strawberries, Lyman also noted that the Strawberry Season ushers in the summertime rush at the farm. “Strawberries are really a June crop they are just this month,” he added, “I always tell people don’t miss it.”
Kailee Russo, a mom from Middletown, was busy guiding kids on the best practices of strawberry picking. She said, “It’s perfect to come for the summer and get outside and pick the wonderful strawberries.” Lyman added, “it’s summertime in Connecticut, come have a great time with the family.”
Strawberry season in Connecticut typically lasts until the end of June, and in some years, it can extend to early July.
