COLEBROOK — Tuesday night brought cold and clear weather to Connecticut, but there was also a storm overnight, a geomagnetic storm.
A solar flare earlier this week made the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, a spectacular sight to be seen as far south as Connecticut.
Local photographer Dennis Coté took photos of the sky in Colebrook, Connecticut and New Marlborough, Massachusetts Tuesday night.
“The Aurora Borealis tonight was simply an amazing experience,” Coté said, “Nothing like it.”
The photographs almost look like sunsets, but the purple over the lake in Massachusetts, and the green above the silo in Colebrook are caused by highly charged particles entering earth’s atmosphere.
“I have driven by the silo many times, tonight I thought this would be the right time.” Coté was certainly correct.
He set his camera to a 13 second exposure (f/1.8 and ISO 1600 for you photo buffs).
Coté said he could also see Venus glowing bright in the night sky.
