GROTON — Local animal organizations are advocating for what they call a humane solution to feral cats roaming the submarine base in Groton.
The Day reports activists have advised officials at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton to use a process called trap, neuter and release, known as TNR, which would involve neutering and vaccinating the felines before returning them to the base.
But a 2002 Navy policy ended existing TNR programs on Navy land and prohibits the creation of more.
Base spokesman Chris Zendan says officials are considering other solutions such as relocating the cats to a private feral cat sanctuary.
Officials earlier this month stepped up enforcement of a policy to not feed feral animals. They convened a “feral cat summit” last year to research solutions.
