BETHANY - Thirteen severely neglected goats, which were among nearly 100 rescued from a farm in Cornwall, now have a safe sanctuary to live out their years.

After being removed last winter from The Butterfield Farm Company in Cornwall, the malnourished goats were sent to an animal rehabilitation facility at the York Correctional Institution in Niantic. A total of 70 goats were found dead at the farm.

Locket's Meadow Farm, now home to over 150 animals, won the goats in a closed bid auction, staged by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture.

Thirteen of the 96 goats were disease free and were auctioned off. Twenty three goats born since the seizure will also likely be offered for adoption. And the owner of Locket's Meadow Farm said she will likely bid on them too.

Tara Bryson, 40, who operates The Butterfield Farm Co., and her boyfriend, Michael Hearl, 43, are both facing numerous animal cruelty charges.

The two are accused of failing to properly feed, water and provide access to appropriate shelter for the herd of both mature and younger goats, most of which were found to be emaciated, according to state agriculture officials said.
