AVON — Police continue to investigate inappropriate photos of young girls circulating around Avon High School.
Earlier this month, Superintendent Gary Mala notified parents, but there has been very little new information since.
Tuesday night was the first public Board of Education meeting since the scandal broke. Even during public comment period the photos weren’t discussed at all. But in whispers and private conversations, it’s still the talk of the town.
Parents and students are still very concerned that this happened at Avon High School, and are embarrassed it happened at all. Word spread fast that these scandalous photos of teenage girls were sent via cell phones the school.
“As a mom, I thought it was really sad and concerning,” said Kiren Bump, an Avon parent who first heard about the scandal on Facebook.
Superintendent Mala sent a letter home to parents and also posted the memo on the school’s website confirming the investigation is ongoing. Mala tells Fox CT it’s in the hands of the police department.
Police say there aren’t any updates yet, and because the case involves juveniles there may be little information they can release.
In the meantime, parents are using this sensitive situation as an opportunity to teach their kids that what you think is private might not stay that way.
“I don’t think kids today understand the implications of pictures and cellphones and social media,” said Bump. “I think it’s a really good opportunity for parents to have a conversation with their children. I think it`s a necessary conversation in today’s world with all of the technology.”
Mala says he is waiting for the police department to finish their investigatio,n and only when that’s complete will he act on the findings.
