STORRS – Erin Craw graduated from the University of Connecticut last month, and one important person wasn’t there to see her collect her diploma.
Her father, Bridgeport Police Captain Robert Craw died in August 2014 of cancer and was unable to fulfill his wish of seeing his daughter finish her undergraduate degree. However, four of his colleagues who knew how much the day meant to Captain Craw, surprised Erin at graduation and joined her in the official photo of the event.
The UConn Police Department helped Assistant Chief James Nardozzi, Capt. Brian McCarthy, Lt. Bill Mayer, and Sgt. Charles Johnson get on to the floor of Gampel Arena on May 10 as Craw graduated from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts during the 5 p.m. ceremony.
Erin’s mother Sheila shared the story with UConn and they posted it on their Facebook page.
“I’m proud of the work that our Police Department does every day keeping our kids and families safe in Bridgeport,” said Mayor Bill Finch in a statement. “On this particular day, our officers were there for one of their own, to be by Erin’s side on this special day and to honor the memory of Captain Craw.”
