WEST HARTFORD–It’s almost time to clean out your cabinets and bring out the special plates.
No, it’s not spring cleaning. It’s Passover, the celebration of the Jews being freed from slavery in Egypt.
The eight-day holiday begins a week from Friday, and one important item to stock up on before the supermarkets run out is matzo. Matzo is unleavened bread, which is symbolic of the haste with which the Jewish slaves had to leave Egypt and travel across the Red Sea before the pharaoh changed his mind about their freedom. During Passover Jews don’t eat leavened grains, so matzo is a substitute.
The Chabad House of Greater Hartford is delivering special, handmade matzo to organizations and families before the sedar begins at sunset next Friday.
This matzo is prepared by hand in Ukraine, instead being mass-produced by machines.
“This is actually baked in the Ukraine, but its baked in a special way where the flour is made from wheat that is guarded from the moment of harvest, ” said Rabbi Shaya Gopin of the Chabad House of Greater Hartford.
Passover officially begins at sunset on Friday, April 3, and ends after sunset on Saturday, April 11.
