SOUTHINGTON — As of Friday, September 30, several Connecticut highway rest areas are cutting back their hours. The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced the new schedules in July, but the changes are now taking effect.
Drivers can still park at the facilities at any time, but will only be able to go inside during the following hours. These hours apply all seven days a week.
· I-84 (eastbound and westbound) in Willington – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· I-84 in Southington – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· I-91 in Wallingford – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· I-91 in Middletown – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· I-95 in North Stonington – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
· I-84 in Danbury – 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The DOT said by closing the rest stops, and therefor not having to pay to staff them, the state will save $2 million a year. In addition to the cut hours, the Welcome Center on I-95 in Westbrook closed July 27. Parking is no longer available at that location.
