FARMINGTON -- Connecticut's first Mormon temple is built and is now open for public tours, that is until its official dedication November 20. The Hartford Connecticut Temple is located along Route 4 in Farmington.
The exterior walls are made with granite from China, while the inside of the temple gleams with white Italian marble, accented by dark marble from Pakistan. The temple is over 32,000 square feet with a series of worship, reflection and instructional rooms rather than a large gathering space. The price tag is still a secret.
It was built for small groups, and that's why traffic concerns on Route 4 due to the temple aren't really a concern.
"You'll have people coming here on Tuesdays through Saturdays, they will arrive all throughout the day, from early morning to late in the day," Larry Wilson, the Temple Department Executive Director for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Although the temple was built for the 27,000 Mormons throughout Connecticut, eastern New York, western Massachusetts, and western Rhode Island, only what's called the "recommended" will be allowed in, those are Mormons who every two years are deemed worthy to enter.
