Massive early morning fire destroys historic Berlin train station

BERLIN — Firefighters in Berlin, Connecticut remain on the scene of a fire at the old Berlin train station Wednesday, hours after a fire broke out in the early morning.

The historic building was built in 1900, but is likely to be a total loss.

The fire started in the building on 51 Depot Road in the Kensington section of town around 4 a.m. Firefighters say the fire was on the roof of the building and that most of the fire has been contained to the main building.

The building was under construction and many trains had been limited until May 2017, and the new building is still expected to be finished at that point.

Here's some video before the fire:

Crews from Rocky Hill and Newington are also responded to the fire.

During construction bus service has been running out of the station and trains have been passing through passing through. On Wednesday, Amtrak service was shut down on the Springfield line between Hartford and New Haven for a time, but officials were able to get trains moving again. Commuters who usually get on or off in Berlin were told to travel to Hartford or New Haven to catch a train.

The ATF is assisting the CT State Police Fire Marshal with the investigation.
