MIDDLETOWN – A double-rollover crash on the Middletown side of the Arrigoni Bridge shut down traffic late Friday evening.
The accident occurred at just after 10 p.m. Police blocked traffic entering the bridge from the Portland side while they investigated and cleared the wrecks. The roadway was reopened overnight.
Police say a preliminary investigation indicates that a 2002 Toyota Avalon being operated by 33-year-old Christina Furtado of Portland was headed west on Hartford Avenue toward Main Street. Furtado apparently failed to negotiate a right turn onto Main Street and instead crossed the median and striking a 2015 Mercedes Benz being operated by Andreas Bisbikos, age 34, of Colchester.
The crash caused the Mercedes Benz to roll over onto its roof, and the Toyota came to rest on its left side. Middletown firefighters had to extricate Furtado from her car. She was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, where she is listed in stable condition.
Bisbikos was treated on scene and transported to Middlesex Hospital where he was later discharged with minor injuries.
This motor vehicle crash is still under investigation. Witnesses are requested to contact Officer Passacantando at 860-638-4063
