HARTFORD–Dr. William Petit has been nominated to run for the state House as a Republican candidate.

According to the Hartford Courant, Petit will run for the 22nd House District, which covers New Britain and Plainville. Petit is currently out of the country and could not confirm if he does intend to run.

Petit, the who was the only survivor in his family after a tragic home invasion in Cheshire in 2007 in which is wife and two daughters were killed, has become an outspoken activist in favor of the death penalty in the state since. He also head Petit Family Foundation, which honors the memory of Jennifer Hawke-Petit, Haley Petit and Michaela Petit by “continuing the kindness, idealism and activism that defined their lives” through donations to education, victims of violence and those suffering from illnesses. His other political views are unknown.

Democratic Rep. Betty Boukus, 73, has served the 22nd District since 1994.

Since Petit currently lives in Burlington, he would have to move to serve the 22nd District.

According to the Courant, Petit considered run for the U.S. House of Representatives 5th District in 2012, but decided against it because his new wife had recently given birth.
