EAST LYME – Emergency crews responded to a house fire Wednesday morning that the fire marshal has determined to have been caused by lighting.
The fire happened on Cardinal Road shortly after 7 a.m. in a single-family home.
Richard Morris, the East Lyme fire marshal, confirmed the fire was caused by lightning. He said that he has conducted interviews and had photographic evidence of the strike.
Neighbors said they saw smoke after the lightning struck, and shortly afterwards the fire started. The fire was brought under control by 10:30 a.m.
There were no reported injuries, and no one was home at the time since the family was in Florida on vacation. An excavator was called to scene to tear apart of what’s left of the home to get to hotspots.
