BRISTOL- The Connecticut State Fire Marshal's Office has taken over the investigation of a believed to be deadly fire in Bristol.
Although city officials originally revealed that two people died in the fire at 29 High Street, the fire department wouldn't confirm that. However, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was on scene with trucks usually used to transport bodies.
The fire broke out at about 2 a.m. in the mixed-use building. CPA offices were on the first floor, while apartments were on the second floor.
Erik LaChapelle witnessed the fire. He said it looked like flames were first shooting out of the middle of the building and then spread to the back.
LaChapelle then saw firefighters pull someone out of the building, carrying a person out a frontside second floor window, down a ladder, and then to an ambulance.
"They were trying to give him CPR and stuff like that to get his heart going," LaChapelle said. "I don't know if they were trying to resuscitate him to bring him to the hospital or they were trying to take care of it before they actually got to the hospital."
The cause of the fire is unclear. Investigators were checking out a gas can behind the building.
A special fund has been set up to help all those affected by the fire. People interested in contributing to the High Street House Fire Fund can go to any Webster Bank branch or send checks to:
