HARTFORD--When it comes to our health, there is a part of the body which many doctors say largely gets ignored: your feet.
For those who have a tough time just getting by, it is that much more difficult to make strides towards getting better, but a new program is aiming to help.
Community Partners in Action has partnered with the Hartford Police Department, the Connecticut Podiatric Medical Association and Fleet Feet of West Hartford to help. Together, they've started the Footwear with Care program, a program to help the homeless and those who can't afford shoes.
"Without a good pair of shoes, you really can't navigate life," says Abby Moore, who founded Footwear With Care. "Many homeless adults and kids don't have shoes. They don't have good shoes, they don't have new shoes."
Thursday night, they held a shoe and pizza party at My Sister's Place in Hartford. About 35 children received a new pair of sneakers.
Latisha Knighton has five children, and says it's a relief for her kids to be able to get new footwear. "It means, like, $200 saved in my pocket," says Knighton. "$200 is a bill, it can be the insurance to the car, gas money, that's groceries."
Moore says the gift of giving is rewarding, and the children give so much back. "You can't buy this kind of feeling, it just comes right from inside. It's the best feeling, it truly is."
