BRISTOL — A former lawyer who police say stole more than a million dollars from an elderly client was arrested Friday, police said.

Roger G. Nielson, 65, of Terrace Lane in Bristol was charged with 14 counts of first-degree larceny and 15 counts of second-degree larceny, they said.

His arrest is the result of a lengthy investigation into a complaint filed in July 2012. The complaint was filed by the administrator of the estate of one of his former clients, police said.

According to the warrant, police said, Nielson wrote 15 checks made payable to himself. The checks were drawn on the elderly client’s checking account, to which Nielson had been added power-of-attorney, they said.

The checks ranged from $1,000 to 150,000, police said.

Nielson was in custody early Friday on $25,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned later in the day in Superior Court.

The chief state’s attorney’s office assisted with the investigation and will help prosecute the case.
