GLASTONBURY–Police have made an arrest after a victim recognized a suspect from a mug shot.

Police began investigating a home burglary that occurred in Glastonbury in July 2014, but the case went cold.

Then, in July of this year, the victim contacted police to say he had seen a mug shot of Derek Benson that was taken in 2014. The photo had been reposted on social media, and in the photo Benson was wearing a sweatshirt that belonged to the victim and was distinct enough for him to identify as his own.

Benson was one of two people arrested in December for a scheme in which police say they stole high-end golf clubs from several homes over several months, and then resold them at a golf outlet in Hartford. Benson was held at the time on $350,000 bond for seven arrest warrants issued.

The investigation linked Benson to the burglary.

Benson was arrested on September 16 on a warrant and charged with burglary in the third degree, larceny in the third degree, criminal mischief in the third degree and criminal trespass in the second degree.

He is being held on a $125,000 bond.
