HAMDEN — Three officers made a heroic save after a man was trapped in a burning car.

On Monday, around 2:30 a.m., Hamden Police responded to Dixwell Avenue and Benham Street for reports that a car was on fire after it crashed.

Capt. Ronald Smith was working in the area and responded to the scene. A bystander said someone was trapped, and Smith saw the unconscious driver.

Smith tried to open the driver’s side door and window to reduce the heavy smoke, but couldn’t due to the damage. He then tried to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher he got from nearby Acropolis Diner, at which point Sgt. Michael Sigmon and Officer Nicholas Levett arrived on the scene to help.

Sgt. Sigmon broke the front passenger window and the officers worked together to pull the man from the burning car.

Hamden Fire arrived to put the fire out.

The victim, Thomas Henderson, 35, suffered multiple injuries and was taken to the hospital.
