PLAINFIELD — An historic 59-acre Plainfield fruit and vegetable farm known for its heirloom apples is being protected under Connecticut’s Farmland Preservation Program.
Department of Agriculture Commissioner Steven K. Reviczky said the 18th Century Purity Farm at the Hall Homestead is the 312th farm to be protected under the program. So far, the initiative has protected more than 40,000 acres statewide from development, preserving the property for agricultural production.
The farm is owned by Paul and JoAnn Desrochers. Formerly Westview Orchards, the farm has been in JoAnn Derochers’ family since the 1830s. It offers pick-your-own apples, including several dozen heirloom varieties. Some are grown on trees more than a century old.
Strawberries, blueberries, peaches, plums and vegetables are also grown on the farm.
It’s the third Plainfield farm to be protected.
