After a major security breach at Home Depot, customers are now reporting seeing fraudulent charges on their credit cards.

Home Depot said roughly 56 million cards were compromised in the hack. In comparison, last year's unprecedented Target cyberattack affected approximately 40 million customers.

Home Depot said the breach affects transactions over a five month period, dating back to April until this month.

In an email sent to customers, Home Depot said the malware used in the breach has been removed from its stores, as of September 18.

The Wall Street Journal reports hackers are using account information to buy prepaid debit cards and electronics.

Banks are now working to block any unusual transactions they come across.

Dow Jones reports bigger banks, like JP Morgan Chase and Capitol One are proactively replacing cards for customers whose data was exposed. Other lenders are reissuing cards when they spot fraudulent charges.

Customers affected by the Home Depot breach will not be responsible for the fraudulent charges, but may have to show paperwork saying they didn't make the purchase.
