FARMINGTON–Another round of layoff notices were issued to state employees on Monday as part of an expected 2,000 or more layoffs to help balance the state budget.
According to the Office of Policy and Management, 89 employees at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington received layoff notices on Monday. Those employees work for a Department of Corrections inmate medical care program. Those employees will no longer work for the department as of the close of business Monday.
So far, about 350 layoff notices have been sent to employees part of Executive Branch departments, including the Department of Social Services (77), Department of Children and Families (113), Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (68) and the Department of Economic and Community Development (4).
The Legislature and Gov. Dan Malloy are working together to eliminate the $922 million deficit we face for Fiscal Year 2017, which starts July 1. Malloy has said there may be in excess of 2,000 layoffs coming in the next several weeks.
It was also announced that the Department of Corrections intends to send out 147 layoff notices, but those specific employees have not yet been determined.
There have also been 126 layoff notices sent to Judicial Department employees. The branch’s budget is expected to be cut $11 million more in the 2017 fiscal year beginning July 1 than was previously expected. In all, about $86 million will be cut.
