BARKHAMSTED–A popular public beach will remain closed this summer after the Metropolitan District was unable to hire enough lifeguards.

West Beach, located at Lake McDonough and operated by MDC, did not get enough qualified applicants for lifeguard positions this year. Therefore, the beach won’t be open for recreation, including swimming.

Swimming is only allowed on East Beach and West Beach at Lake McDonough; other areas, like Goose Green Beach, are blocked off from swimming.

MDC says to expect East Beach to be busier on weekends since West Beach won’t be open, and to get there early before the park lot fills up.

“This action is necessary to ensure the safety and security of all our recreational users,” a press release said.
