HARTFORD — The former CEO of The Hartford financial services firm who was credited with guiding the company as it recovered from the recession has died. Liam E. McGee was 60.
The Hartford, Connecticut-based company announced Monday that McGee had died Friday of cancer.
Presiding director Thomas A. Renyi says McGee made the “tough decisions necessary to guide the company” after the recession in 2009.
The Hartford received $3.4 billion as part of the federal financial bailout immediately after the crisis in 2008. It repaid the money in March 2010, nine months after receiving it.
McGee was CEO from October 2009 through July 2014.
He was a native of County Donegal, Ireland, and grew up in Southern California.
Gov. Dannel Malloy tweeted his statement on the passing of McGee:
“Liam McGee set 2 missions, saving a great company and improving the city in which it is headquartered. He accomplished both. Our deepest sympathies go out to Liam’s family, friends and loved ones.”
Sen. Richard Blumenthal also issued the following statement:
“Liam was a community and business leader of hugely impressive integrity, intellect, dedication, and grace– who gave me his views and advice with an incomparable combination of charm and candor. From our first lunch to my last visit to his office at The Hartford, he was unstintingly generous in his friendship, and his clear caring for the people who worked with him. He contributed tirelessly to the Hartford community to our state and nation, touching countless lives. On this day, celebrating American values and history, I will remember Liam with special sadness, and my heart goes out to his family. I send my sympathy to his families and colleagues at The Hartford.”
