HARTFORD — An additional $2.7 million is being made available to encourage Connecticut consumers to purchase electric vehicles.

Democratic Gov. Dan Malloy announced the extra funding for the Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Automobile Purchase Rebate Program on Friday during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Connecticut International Auto Show in Hartford.

Under the program, residents, businesses and municipalities that purchase or lease a battery electric, fuel cell, or plug-in hybrid can receive a cash rebate ranging from $750 to $5,000.

Since the state-administered program was launched in May 2015, more than $2 million in rebates have been issued or reserved for the purchase or lease of 960 electric vehicles. The initiative is funded with money that became available to Connecticut when Northeast Utilities merged with NSTAR to form Eversource Energy.
