WATERBURY — A purported gang member convicted of killing a Waterbury bar owner in 1998 has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.
The Republican-American reports that 41-year-old Victor Santiago — a member of the Latin Kings, according to prosecutors — was sentenced Wednesday for the shooting of Wilfred “Freddy” Morales, the owner of Morales’ Cafe in Waterbury. Santiago was convicted in August.
Prosecutors said Santiago didn’t pull the trigger, but conspired with his brothers to kill the victim. Prosecutors called the defendant a “liar, a gangster, a drug dealer, a wife abuser, a convicted felon and a thief” who has never held a legitimate job or contributed to society.
Santiago was previously convicted of killing Morales in 2010, but the verdict was overturned because of prosecutor misconduct.
