SOUTHBURY -- The medical examiner has determined that a man found dead Tuesday was a victim of homicide. His son got sick and died soon after police arrived on the scene.

State Police detectives from Western District Major Crime are investigating the case.

On Tuesday, February 16, around 10 p.m. officers from the Southbury Police Department and the Resident Trooper’s Office responded to Jacob Road for a reported medical emergency.

Police said they found a man dead on the floor in the home. They identified that man as Dennis Fitzsimmons, 74, of Southbury. The medical examiner said he died from compression of neck with blunt injury of head and trunk.

While investigating, officers found his son in the home, Timothy Fitzsimmons, 43. While speaking with officers, he suddenly became ill and unconscious, according to police. Officers and EMS rendered first aid and transported him to Waterbury Hospital for evaluation. The medical examiner has not determined a cause of death for the younger Fitzsimmons.

Police determined the younger Fitzsimmons was responsible for the death of his father.

Later that night, Timothy was pronounced dead at the hospital.
