WATERBURY -- A Waterbury teen was killed Tuesday morning when he was riding his bike and hit a car.
Police said they were called to intersection of Cooke Street and Chase Avenue at 5:15 a.m. Police found the teen in the street with a serious head injury.
The investigation revealed that the teen was biking south on Cooke Street and had a blinking red light at the intersection. When he entered the intersection he slammed into the car, which was driving on Chase Avenue and had a blinking yellow light. He was thrown about 15 to 20 feet off his bike.
The victim was taken to Waterbury Hospital with serious head injuries and was pronounced dead about a half hour later. He wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Police later identified him as Alex Suarez, 14. Suarez was apparently biking home from a friend's house when the incident occurred.
He was an eighth-grader at Waterbury's North End Middle School. Police say the boy's family is devastated by his death.
The driver of the car did remain on the scene and isn't facing charges.
