MIDDLETOWN–A Connecticut mayor is paying it forward in a big way for one of his residents.

Olivia DiMauro, 45, is in need of a new kidney, and it turns out that a high-profile candidate was the one matched to her.

The Middletown Press reports that DiMauro, a part-time stylist and mother of two teens, has been on the donor registry since November 2015, and she’s finally found a match.

DiMauro has polycystic kidney disease, an inherited condition that causes clusters of cysts to form in the kidneys, which can cause serious complications. DiMauro would have needed dialysis if she couldn’t find a donor, though she remains in relatively good health.

When Yale-New Haven Hospital called to say it had found a match, DiMauro couldn’t believe who was willing to be her live donor.

Mayor Dan Drew is stepping up to help DiMauro, her husband and their two children move forward.

More than 123,000 are on the organ transplant list, and in 2014 more than 5,000 living donors gave kidney and liver transplants.
