NEW HAVEN - It has been a long-standing traffic problem for New Haven.
The south side of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge, crossing over the Quinnipiac River, is just about ready to receive a whole lot of traffic.
The bridge, which is informally called the Q Bridge, has five lanes in each direction with full shoulders, three thru lanes and operational lanes for entrance ramps.
The original span was built in the late 1950s and is among the most heavily traveled of the Northeast corridor between New York and Boston. The new bridge is a big step up and a big step away from the caution signs that currently light up the bridge.
This big endeavor has been going on since the year 2000. Remarkably, it is still on time and under budget at a third of the 15-year project cost.
The north side of the bridge was completed back in 2012. Now, three years later, the south side is ready to go, and they’re going to merge it all together.
The bridge, which spans the Quinnipiac River, is a key part of an 18-year, nearly $2 billion I-95 improvement program in the New Haven Harbor area.
