NORTH CANAAN — Police arrested a volunteer firefighter and charged him with arson Thursday after developing leads based on another fire in town.
Police arrested Anthony Stumbaugh, Jr., 24, of North Canaan and charged him with arson and reckless endangerment. Stumbaugh was a volunteer firefighter for the Canaan Fire Department for two years. Officials said he has been suspended until after the outcome of the case.
State police said a fire was reported at Stumbaugh’s home on Railroad St, in North Canaan on October 3 around 2 a.m. The fire was investigated be the State of Connecticut Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
During the investigation, they developed information that Stumbaugh was involved in another unrelated fire on October 20, and the fire on October 3. The suspect turned himself into state police and was held on $50,000 bond.
