Waterbury Police arrived on scene just before 9 a.m. on reports of a disturbance. Upon arrival, crews found Ebony Swaby, 22, of 11 Clifton Avenue, suffering from gunshot wounds.
Police said she was shot several times by her live-in boyfriend, Camal Barnes, 32, during a domestic dispute. Barnes then called 911.
Barnes is in custody and charged with murder and risk of injury. The risk of injury charge stems from Barnes and Swaby's 2-month-old baby being present at the time of the assault. The baby is now in DCF custody.
Swaby was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:20 a.m.
Sunday would have been Swaby's first Mother's Day with her new baby.
"It's very heartbreaking, sad, lose your mother right before Mother’s Day," neighbor Stayshon White said. "I feel bad for the lady, the kid, I feel bad for the family. I hope the best for them."
White said he is sick of all the violence in Waterbury and hopes people will start to put their guns down.
"I know there’s been a lot going on in the city right now, a lot of chaos. I just hope the negativity stops, especially around my neighborhood," he said. "Bullets don`t have a name on them. They can hit any target, any house, anywhere."
No other injuries occurred during this incident. Police said Barnes is being held on a $1 million dollar bond.
